What Is Feng Shui Interior Design?

Translated to English, Feng Shui roughly means
wind-water.

Feng Shui is essentially the art of arranging objects
to achieve harmony in the surrounding environment.

Not only is Feng Shui used in interior design, it is
used in choosing a place to live, a burial spot and
agricultural planning.

It is highly believed that Feng Shui has an effect on
health, wealth and personal relationships. Feng Shui
is a traditional Chinese practice.

Early Feng Shui interior design relied on astronomy to
find the symmetry between humans and the universe.

The early Chinese often used the celestial poles
determined by the pole stars to determine the north
and south. Feng Shui instruments dating back to 278
and 209 BC have been unearthed from tombs.

As practiced today, the goal of Feng Shui is to
situate the human designed environment on spots with
good qi.

Spots are determined by an axis in time. Feng Shui
teaches that areas that are not suitable for human
settlement should be left in their natural state.

Qi, pronounced Chi, literally means air. In Fung Shui,
Qi is the flow of energy and may be based on a form of
solar energy.

Polarity in feng shui is known as ying and yang.

This is the absolute balance between two entities. It
is the good and the bad, the living and the dead, and
is one of the key principals behind Feng Shui interior
design.

Most Westerners knew nothing about Feng Shui until
1972 when Richard Nixon visited The People’s Republic
of China.

New Age by western entrepreneurs then reinvented Feng
Shui. Feng Shui now speaks to the profound role of
magic, mystery and order in American life.

How To Change Your Home Into A Zen Home ?

If you want to redesign your home into the Zen style,
there are key areas to start. Zen interior design
usually brings to mind scenes of peace and
tranquility, a link with nature and a minimalist
Japanese style.

Clutter and loud colors are not used, neither are
complex patterns, excess furniture or lots of
ornaments. Zen actually isn’t even a style at all. It
is best described as a pure state of being.

Many people think Zen is associated with the Japanese,
but its actual origin is from China. Zen can be
described as a branch of Buddhism that focuses on
meditation to gain enlightenment.

Zen is about inner awareness and true awakening of the
pure Buddha mind. Creating a Zen style in your home
can be easy. The mind must be brought into the correct
state of mind.

The focus is on the here and now, calmness, stillness
and on just being there.

The first step is to go through each room and clear
the clutter. Move out ornaments and knick-knacks.

In Zen, it is important to clear the clutter in order
to clear the mind. Be brutal when going through your
items.

What you decide to keep should serve a purpose. If you
don’t have the heart to get rid of something, store it
away out of sight.

Also, rid your home of any extra pieces of furniture.
This means walls, ceilings, and floors also. Anything
elaborate or fussy is not Zen.

Then it is time to think about color. Colors should be
soothing and calm, not loud or bold.

Have you put Zen into your home, how did you change
your home.

Taking A Look At Modern Interior Design For Your Home !

Modern interior design has come into its own and the
distinct look can turn your home into a masterpiece of
aesthetic beauty without compromising practicality or
function.

Modern interior design often refers to mid-century
design. Many people mistake modern interior design
with contemporary interior design.

In fact, many interior designers borrow elements of
1960’s and 1970’s interior design. But this doesn’t
mean your house will be decorated with garish
wallpaper and upholstery.

The basics of modern interior design utilize new
materials and techniques. The most common
installations include metal, blown-glass and concrete.

Metal is typically used for accents and fixtures. Many
people think that the metal decor just adds coldness
to the room, but what it is used for is to enhance the
warmth of the nearby items.

The metal, glass and concrete create a simplistic
design for the modern home.

Blown glass can add a distinctive look to your home.
Pieces can be one of a kind and can add warmth and
depth as well as color. The pieces can make your
modern interior design look stand out.

Blown glass can be used in places such as light
fixtures, or as creative artistic sculptures. Colored
blown glass can fit into any decorating theme so a
piece can last through every decorating whim you may
have.

Decorative concrete can be finished numerous ways and
can add any number of effects. They are used in
floors, counter tops and furniture.

Many homeowners are not aware just how versatile
concrete can be in decorating a modern homes interior
design. Both inside and outside of your home.

How is it done?

And a different way that it can be done is like this.

What are your thought on the modern interior design
do you like it or not? Please leave your comments.

Change The Look Of Your Room And Stay On A Small Budget!

Most of us today work hard for what we have and even
though it may not be the best decor, it is still ours.
What many don’t realize is that there are steps you
can take to redesign your interior on almost any
budget.

With a little hard work and a little know-how, you can
take what you have, add a little to it and make it
look like an interior designer came in and did a small
makeover.

You should always start by re-using existing items in
your home. This is where you will save a lot of money.

In fact, you wont spend any money at all. If you take
inventory of what you have and look at things in a
different light, you will see an all-new outlook on
your items.

Sometimes, things in our home become stagnant and we
are used to seeing them day in and day out.

Take those items and consider using them in a
different way. Try moving things around, give them a
good cleaning and find them a new home.

Paint can be your best friend when you are trying to
do interior design on a budget. Paint can totally
change the look of a room, and for only a few dollars
per room.

It just takes a little elbow grease and a little work
to make your old dingy room look new again. And white
is not the only color you can paint your walls.

Experiment with color. New paint cannot only change
the look of your room, but it can change the look of
the furniture you put in it, and the decor you add.

Change the look of the furniture by changing the fabric
on them. Slip covers, table clothes, through pillows, a new
area rug, and even re-upholster the furniture or refinish the
piece of wooden furniture.

What have you done to change the look of your rooms?
Have you reused some of the things in your room and still
changed the look of the room? Let us know what you did.
Please leave a comment, it helps everyone.

What Are Some Of The Hot Trends In Interior Design!

Over the years, many looks have come and gone in home
interior design. The numbers of trends are infinite
and people love to mix and match trends in order to
customize their look to match their personalities. But
there are some hot trends that keep popping up and
sticking with our modern society.

The number one hot interior design trend is the French
Neo-classical. It is a look that mixes the style of
old money with Hollywood regency.

The style focuses on restraint along with muted
finishes and architectural delineation.

Another look we can’t get away from is the Shanghai
Modern. It is a Chinese contemporary design. It
incorporates the classic curves of Asian furniture
with fretwork patterns, koi and foo dogs, using them
as a sort of pop art.

Another hot trend is called the Enchanted Forest. As
the name describes, this is a more whimsical look and
is definitely not for everyone.

This look is very tongue in cheek, using wood grain
prints, antlers and antler accessories, trophy mount
heads and gnome-like creatures throughout the home.

A big look that will always stay a classic is the
Americana look. This look takes objects from
pre-Revolutionary times and utilizes them in the
modern home.

This is a broader range of interior design, covering
decor from the 1770’s through the 20th century. The
main focus is on red, white, and blue.

These are just a few of the hot trends that we
continue to see incorporated into living spaces as
well as businesses. But in no way are these the only
ways to decorate your home. The range is broad and
only limited by your imagination.

Have you used any of these in your home? What other
trends do you see that you have used? Leave your comments.

Using Lawnmowers In A Safe Manner !

A lawnmower is fitted with sharp blades in order to cut
grass cleanly and evenly. And since there are sharp objects
involved, safety concerns come with using this machine.

From the period 1996-2004 alone, almost 670,000 were
injured by lawnmowers according to the Annals of Emergency
Medicine.

Here are some tips on how you can use your lawnmower
safely.

1. Be careful of debris

- mowers, the motorized types in particular, can hurl
debris such as rocks with tremendous force. That is why
other people should steer clear of it when it is in
operation.

2. Be careful of hot surfaces

- there are other injuries caused by touching hot surfaces
of the lawnmower. People should therefore avoid coming into
contact with a mower’s surface when it is being used or
right after it has been put into use.

3. When servicing the mower, make sure it’s turned off

- believe it or not, people are also injured by their
mowers when they tried to service the mower without turning
the machine off. This isn’t only irresponsible, this is
plainly stupid.

4. Careful with those blades

- as mentioned earlier, the blades of mowers are extremely
sharp so people should be careful when handling them or
replacing them.

5. Avoid those feet and hands

- running a mower over feet and hands is another cause of
lawnmower-related injuries. People operating this machine
must avoid mowing where there are people or at least tell
the people to move away while gardeners do their job.

How many of these things do you do for safety of yourself
and others? Please leave a comment.

How can you lessen the impact to the environment by what you choose to grow in your landscape?

Landscaping is an activity that can change the face of the
environment no matter how small the household’s lawn is.

Because of this, homeowners and contractors alike should be
aware of this fact and find ways of lessening the impact of
this activity.

Here are some tips on having an earth-friendly landscape.

1. Find plants that consume little water

- one of the main requirements of a landscape is to have an
ample amount of water for the plants. But since water is
becoming a scarcer and scarcer commodity, homeowners should
choose plants that consume little water.

Not only do they help save the environment, they also help
cut a homeowner’s water costs.

Plants that are native to your area are plants that will use less
water. They are better able to withstand draught.

In our area cactus do very well and do not take a lot of water.
As you can see they are quite lovely as well.

2. Use organic fertilizers

- artificial fertilizers contain chemicals that may
otherwise be harmful to the soil.

Organic fertilizers should therefore be chosen in favor of
artificial ones to lessen its impact on the soil and at the
same time, ensure that one has a healthy plant.

Creating a compost pit and using cut grass as mulch can
help provide organic fertilizers to a garden.

3. Have trees in your lawn

- trees provide shade in your lawn and if they are
well-positioned, they can reduce energy costs spent on
cooling and heating.

Choose the right kind of tree for the right area in your yard.

*If you can plant evergreen trees to the north of your home to
block the cold winds of winter that blow from that direction.
They keep the needles all year long so they block the winds.

*Plant trees that the leave fall off in the fall to the south to
block the heat of the day for less cost for cooling your home.

4. Find alternative sources of water

- while sprinklers are a great way to water a lawn, rain
water can be a good alternative too. So when designing a
landscape, find a way of irrigating it using rain water
from the household’s rooftops.

A rain barrel collects the water from your roof and with the faucet
you can put a hose on it and water your plants. If you get a lot of rain
you can put more than one so when one is full it will send it to the other
one from the top overflow hose at the top to go into the other barrel.

This helps a lot in cutting the costs on water used by
sprinklers.

Please leave your comments, we love to read them.

Tips For The Best Landscaping Practices For Your Own Home Garden.

In order to make a great landscape, there are certain
tried-and-tested practices that you can follow. Not only do
these practices help you create a beautiful landscape, they
also ensure that you do not waste any money and that you
are not harming the environment in any way.

Here are some of the best landscaping practices that you
can do in your own home garden.

1. Design your landscape in a way where water is retained
well. This doesn’t only go for water that comes from your
sprinklers but also storm runoffs.

By having this kind of set-up, you do not spend a lot on
watering your plants and you also help keep your
community’s water supply at bay.

2. Use fertilizers responsibly. Some people become
trigger-happy when it comes to using fertilizers on their
landscapes.

While putting in too much fertilizer can be detrimental to
the environment, using organic fertilizers or choosing
plants that are well-accustomed to the local environment
will help in curbing the problem.

3. Take it easy on pesticides and weed killers - just like
fertilizers, pesticides and weed killers can do more harm
than good if used irresponsibly.

4. Schedule watering of the plants. Watering the plants
early in the morning help in retaining the water much
longer than doing it at noon for example.

While considering the time for watering the plants may seem
like a small thing, it translates to something big when the
water supply is put into the equation.

Please leave your comments, we enjoy reading them.

Lanscapes Are Things That Have Been Passed Down To Us Through Time!

Gardening is an integral part of the history of landscape
architecture. Without the knowledge of gardening, plants
would easily die out and there will be nothing for people
to admire in lawns and parks everywhere in the world.

This article takes a peek at the history of gardening
beginning from the ancient times to today’s society.

People have appreciated having vast lawns and gardens in
their households for a long time. Even in ancient Egyptian
tombs, there are illustrations that show ponds surrounded
by different types of trees which are evidences of how
gardening flourished even at that time.

Then there’s the fabled Hanging Gardens of Babylon which is
one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was said
to have been built by the Persian king Darius the Great for
his wife.

The civilizations that came after Egypt and Persia
continued with this tradition of having a vast expanse of
gardens. These include the Ancient Greeks and Romans.

But gardening isn’t an entirely Western activity. Even the
ancient Chinese and Japanese have built landscapes in their
temples.

Their designs are usually aimed at replicating natural
landscapes such as mountains and rivers.

The Middle Ages brought about a revival of gardening
practices in Europe. By the 16th to the 18th centuries, the
development of such gardens was at an all time high.

And while gardening of the past was solely in the domain of
houses and temples, it played an important role in urban
planning by the time the 20th century came.

It has since then played a part in the creation not only of
houses but also of buildings throughout the world.

Gardening can be passed on to others. Share the love with
your family. Share your stories with us , that we can all enjoy.

Share the harvest !

This is a post of a blog that we like to read. It asked gardeners in the spring to pant an extra row of vegetables to share with the hungry in your community. If you have a garden and you do not know what to do with to many squash or what ever if may be - share it with the food pantries in your area or a soup kitchen. They would love to have it to share with others.

How many people can you help feed? It does not have to be a lot to help out someone else. What a blessing that would be to someone in need.

What have you done, we would love to read your comments.

Irrigation For Your Landscape!

Irrigation is an important component of planning your
landscape. That is because it plays a crucial role in the
overall function of your landscape.

Irrigation brings water to your plants and without it, your
plants will die and the time and energy you invested on
building your landscape will be put to waste.

There are several considerations when irrigating your
landscape. Below is a list of some of them.

1. Find a water source that’s efficient as possible.
Regardless of the size of your lawn, you will need to water
it regularly in order for the plants to survive.

You must therefore find a cost-efficient way to do it. You
don’t even have to use sprinklers all the time. What you
can do, for example, is direct rain water from your roof to
your lawn.

2. Check your equipment for damage. If the pieces of
equipment that you use for irrigation is defective, you
waste water and money for something that cannot do its job
well anyway.

So regularly check your hoses, sprinklers and other water
equipment for damage because you can save a lot of money by
doing this. As a rule of thumb, immediately change whatever
broken equipment that you have in your garden.

3. Do your watering early in the day - this method is
another cost-saver because by watering your plants early in
the day, the water doesn’t evaporate easily. This ensures
you that you are using your resources well and that nothing
goes to waste.

How are you saving water as you irrigate your plants?

Plants,Plants And More Plants For Your Landscape !

Choosing the right plants for your landscaping project is
one of the most important aspects of landscaping. First of
all, the plants are the ones which people will see
immediately so their impression of your lawn will depend
much on how you choose your plants.

Below is a list of some tips on choosing the right kind of
plants for your lawn.

1. Know thy plants

- being familiar with the plants that you are planning to
grow in your lawn is important because it will immediately
tell you whether or not they will grow in your area.

Aside from that, it also tells you how large it will grow
(which is important when you have a small lawn) and how
much care you would give to it.

2. Choose your color combination

- ugly lawns are those with terrible color combinations.
You should therefore be mindful of the plants or the
flowers’ colors before you even buy them. Otherwise, you’d
be in for a disaster.

3. How well can you maintain them?

- this is another important consideration when choosing a
plant for your lawn. There are plants that need extra care
and attention while others can grow with little
maintenance.

4. Use local plants when possible.

This saves on the water that we use in the yard. They can
withstand the temperature changes of your area.
They grow
well in the soil type that you have.

If you’re the busy type, you might want to opt for the
low-maintenance plants. On the other hand, if you have
extra time or are considering getting the services of a
gardener, then opt for those that require a little more
effort from you. What’s important is that you have a plant
that you can maintain.

We would love to hear your comments!

Make A Plan Of Your Yard With A Good Landscape Design!

A big part of the decision on whether or not a landscape is
good is its design. A well-thought out design is one that
is pleasing to the eye.

But if you’re planning to have your lawn landscaped but are
not sure on how to design it, this article will help you
get started with a few tips.

1. Get a contractor

- getting a contractor is the easiest way to go about
landscaping your lawn. They will provide you with the
information and the man-power so that you can have a great
looking lawn in no time.

2. Draw your design

- whether you get the services of a contractor or wish to
do the landscaping yourself, it is important that you put
the design of your intended landscape on paper.

It makes things so much easier instead of merely trying to
describe things as the latter method can make for subpar
results.

3. Organize your area

- regardless the size of your lawn, it is important that
you organize the different areas of it well. A landscaped
lawn isn’t only a vast tract of land with grass, trees and
bushes.

You should also consider areas such as the tool sheds, your
private area where you can relax and the likes.

4. What plants do you want to have?

- the plants that you choose to have on your lawn will also
determine the overall look of your landscape. Consider them
carefully, because majority of what others will see are the
plants that you have on your lawn.

You can choose to do all of it at one time or different sections
at different times. If you have it all down on paper it will all
look very well together even if you do it in steps. This might
work best if you are doing the project yourself with no contractor.

How has it worked for you? Let us know with your comments.

Things To Help Your Soil Stay Healthy!

A successful landscape is one that lasts a long time. But
if you’re wondering what the secret is for a landscape’s
longevity then the answer lies on the soil. If your soil is
good, then you are almost always assured of growing healthy
plants.

However, not every soil in the world is built for growing
good plants. More often than not, there are several things
you have to do first before you can even plant anything on
particular plot of land. Here are some tips on how you can
have a soil that is healthy and fertile.

1. Mix your soil with compost

- mixing your soil with compost makes it better in
retaining air and water than ordinary soil can. Also, the
compost introduces more nutrients to the soil which will
help a lot in growing plants.

Creating compost can take a while, though. Active
composting, wherein you take a systematic approach in
creating compost, takes about a month.

Meanwhile, passive composting, the method where you let
nature take its course in composting the organic materials,
takes much longer.

2. Putting mulch on your soil

- mulch is any type of organic material that you put on top
of your soil. It can range from cut grass to bark. Putting
mulch on the soil can help the soil retain water better and
prevent it from eroding easily.

Mulch can save time, money and your energy.
Time: less time weeding, money: it feeds your garden
as it breaks down (less cost on fertilizers )- less water
that you need to use. Your yard looks good without as
much of your energy.

3. Take it easy on the fertilizer

- just because fertilizers help put nutrients on your soil
doesn’t mean you have to overdo it. In fact, too much
fertilizer can have adverse effects on your soil and the
environment in general.

How have you used these things in your gardens-flowers
as well as your vegetable gardens? Share your comments
we love to read them.

What Type Of Soil Do You Have?

The soil is an essential part of any garden. It is where
the plants are cultivated, and if the soil is of a good
quality, the plants that grow there are evidently good as
well.

While one can’t find the perfect soil for the perfect
garden all of the time, combining different types of soils
can produce the same effect. Below is a list of the common
soil types and what they do.

1. Sand

- this type of soil is known for its lack of ability to
hold water. This can be good in a way since this quality
helps prevent the roots of plants from getting soaked in
water for a very long time.

The only downside is that one has to water the plants more
often than other soil types.

2. Clay

- gets very sticky when wet. While this type of soil can
hold nutrients very well, it is unable to let in air and
water very well which could be detrimental to plants.

3. Silt

- is somewhat of a cross between clay and sand. This type
of soil holds a lot of nutrients like clay and doesn’t
retain water well just like sand.

4. Loam

- is the most ideal type of soil because almost every type
of plants will grow on this. It is because loam is
formulated using a good balance of sand, clay and silt.

Just like silt and clay, it holds nutrients well. As for
water retention, it is midway between sand and clay since
loam can hold water pretty well without draining it as
easily as sand would.

What Is Landscaping And Why Do I Need To Do It To My Yard?

While a lot of people have already come across the word
landscaping, not a lot of them actually know what the term
stands for. This article is tailored for those who want to
learn about landscaping but don’t know where to begin.

For starters, landscaping is the modification of a
landscape such as a lawn to make it more aesthetically
pleasing or to make it more functional.

A lot of homeowners landscape their homes primarily because
they want to make their surroundings more attractive. But
more than that, a landscaped house usually has a higher
real estate value than one that isn’t.

People who want to have their properties landscaped usually
acquire the services of professionals. Landscaping is a
time and labor-intensive task, so in order to do that in no
time at all, homeowners invest in landscaping services to
turn their vision into reality.

But there are also those who want to take a hands-on
approach to landscaping. Again, this is a task that
requires a lot of time and energy on the part of the
homeowner so the results may not be visible immediately.

A well-landscaped property is one that is well-planned and
the plans should also be well-executed. However, the great
thing about going through all this trouble is that it
brings a great feeling of self-fulfillment to the homeowner
after performing such a difficult task.

Depending on what the homeowner wants, the landscape design
could be simple or complex. Simple ones make for easy
maintenance while complex ones make for a lot of room for
trees and flowers.

Be kind and leave a comment that all can benefit from it.

Why Landscape Your Yard?

If you haven’t thought of landscaping your lawn yet, you
probably might not grasp the reason why others do it to
their own homes.

Well, there are a number of reasons why some homeowners
have their lawns landscaped and we have listed some of them
in this article.

1. Aesthetics

- there are some homeowners who want to improve their
house’s appearance by having their lawns landscaped. After
all, who wants to have a dull-looking yard, much less an
unkempt one?

2. To make the property look unique

- a well-landscaped lawn is one that attracts the
neighbors’ attention. In this aspect, landscaping one’s
lawn is important in giving a particular household an
identity, something that will set them apart from their
neighbors.

3. To increase the property’s value

- while landscaping can have aesthetic benefits on the
lawn, it can also help in increasing the value of the
property. This is especially important for those who wish
to just improve the house and sell it later on.

4. Landscaping can cut energy costs

- it is a well-known fact that shade from trees can
dramatically lower the temperature in a particular area.
This spells a lot of savings in air-conditioning expenses
in households who have trees on their yards.

As you see, there are a lot of reasons why people choose to
landscape their lawns. While those mentioned above are only
a few of them, there are others more that make landscaping
such a good idea in any household.

You can also help the wild life in the area that need things to eat
in the winter. Birds are a joy to watch and add to your yard.
Butterflies are something else that are great to watch in the yard.
